This is my mom. She is a volunteer at the at the Aguilar Public Library here in New York City. Once a week she works with adults who want to learn to read. These are some of her students. She’s been doing this for over a year now and to hear her describe the moment when someone who could not read all of a sudden starts reading…well it’s just amazing.
The NYPL is facing major budget cuts. Programs like this (and many others) are in danger. Entire libraries could be closed. What does it say about a society with a Starbucks and a Chase on every other corner but lacking the funds to maintain the very places that exist solely to inform, educate and delight its people?
Libraries are not just for borrowing books. They are places where the community can come together to learn, explore and help each other. We need more of this and fewer ATM’s and venti lattes.
I don’t want my daughter growing up in a word without libraries. I made a donation today to the NYPL. I’d be grateful if you would as well.
