The problem with journalism on the Web today is that it’s being contaminated by the Web form factor.

Mike McCue, Founder & CEO of Flipboard, speaking to the LA Times about his goals for the social magazine iPad app. (via futurejournalismproject)

McCue wants a fresh start—and he thinks the iPad gives it to him. When he says, “Let’s leverage the power of the Web—don’t get rid of it, but make the Web beautiful again,” he’s not really talking about the Web at all. He’s talking about using tablets to hit the “reset button on the presentation of content to readers.”

And McCue is not alone. I suspect that most of the publishers, if not all, that have embraced the iPad feel the same way. They feel, deep down inside, that there is something not right with their websites, that the Web in its current form does not capture what it is that they love about their print products. Deep down these publishers must feel like they have failed and the iPad represents that rare opportunity to start anew, to get it right this time. Will they?
